We'll begin with a box,
and the plural is boxes;
but the plural of ox
became oxen not oxes. One fowl is a goose,
but two are called geese,
yet the plural of moose
should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse
or a nest full of mice;
yet the plural of house
is houses, not hice. If the plural of man
is always called men,
why shouldn't the plural of pan
be called pen? If I spoke of my foot
and show you my feet,
and I give you a boot,
would a pair be called beet?If one is a tooth
and a whole set are teeth,
why shouldn't the plural of booth
be called beeth? Then one may be that,
and three would be those,
yet hat in the plural
would never be hose,
and the plural of cat
is cats, not cose. We speak of a brother
and also of brethren,
but though we say mother,
we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
but imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim.

One of the most common help requests from nurses is "how can I make my resume stand out from the crowd?"
When applying to RN positions, you can be pretty sure that everyone else applying to that job has similar qualifications, skills and experience as you. The whole purpose of a job advertisement is to get people with a certain level of skills and experience to apply so like it or not, you're all going to look about the same on paper.
But what really separates good nurses from average ones is talent.
Demonstrating talent in your resume is hard but your cover letter is perfect for showing employers your talents and how they can help the employers get the results they're looking for. But before I talk about your cover letter, there are a few key points you need to understand about talent.
You would think that nurses with a talent for patient empathy would be too emotional to be good at their jobs. Yet research has shown that nurses with these attributes get better patient outcomes and satisfaction ratings than nurses who try not to become emotionally involved. This has led to some hospitals actually changing their interviewing technique to find people that have a talent for empathy.
Which leads to an interesting dilemma...
Suppose you're in an interview and you've been trained into thinking that being empathetic with your patients is a bad thingthen the odds are good that youll give the answers you think an employer wants to hear, for fear of missing out on the job.
But, let's say you are the sort of person who gets emotionally involved with your patients and you're a good nurse. Would you like to work for a hospital that supports and encourages your talent for patient empathy or would you like to work in a hospital where they crush this personal attribute?
The answer is obvious but most job-seekers just don't get it.
They're too busy trying to get a job instead of thinking about trying to find a place that can use not just their skills but their talents as well.
My point is that you should use interviews to find places that support and encourage you, your skills and your talents. If you're a nurse who just likes doing her job and doesn't want to get involved too much with patients then a hospital that shares those same values is a perfect fit for you. But if you find that you're getting in trouble with management because you get 'too involved' with your patients then quit immediately and find a place where your talent is appreciated.
Use the interview to ask questions and answer every questions honestly... even if you think it might cost you the job.
I'd rather miss out on 10 average jobs where my talents and personalities would likely be crushed anyway and be available for when that dream job comes along.
Your cover letter is a perfect vehicle for expressing your personality and your talents as well. Be bold. Explain how you love your patients and have been in trouble for being too empathetic even though you still did all the work required of you. Send pictures of the flowers you've received from happy patients and then send it out to hospitals in your area...
The hospitals that want people like you will call you back. Those that don't, won't.
After an applicant passes the NCLEX-RN exam through the California Board of Nursing, a letter is sent to the applicant stating that a Social Security Number (SSN) is required before a permanent license is issued.
The letter from the California Board of Nursing also states that the SSN must be provided within a 3-year window or the applicant’s file will be considered abandoned and destroyed. In the present climate of retrogression, many nurses are realizing that their 3-year window of opportunity to provide their SSN is approaching. This is due to the fact that one simply cannot obtain a SSN under present immigration conditions.
If you find yourself caught in this predicament, you need to take action before the 3-year time limit has expired. We recommend that you contact the California Board of Nursing to discuss your case or have the Certification and Licensure Specialist at the staffing agency with which you are listed do so.
For your convenience, we have provided the below information.
Mailing Address:Board of Registered Nursing P.O. Box 944210 Sacramento, CA 94244-2100
The ideal outcome would be to have the CA Board of Nursing decide to extend the pass letter so that no further action is required for another defined period of time. We have heard of instances where additional time has been granted when the nurse personally interfaces with the CA Board. However, that is not always the decision reached. If you are told that an extension cannot be granted, you must take steps to ensure that you will not be required to take the NCLEX exam again.
Failing an extension, the next best option is to endorse to another state which does not require a SSN in order to hold an active license. One such state is Vermont. By endorsing to Vermont, you will hold an active license that you will be able to renew once. This effectively delays any further steps toward California licensure for up to 3 years without the risk of having to take the NCLEX again.
The application is 5 pages long and the fee is $150.00. Only pages 1 - 3 of the application are required. DO NOT send pages 4 -5 or your school documents to the Vermont Board. You need to attach a copy of your CA pass letter with the date you took the exam. You also must attach a copy of the nursing license on which you currently practice.
After arriving in the States and obtaining your SSN, you will be required to re-endorse to California according to their guidelines.
Please be aware when you start the re-endorsement process, that the CA Board of Nursing will have considered your application abandoned and your file will no longer be active. Thus, it will be necessary for you to submit all educational credentials a second time. While it will be inconvenient to do so, it will protect you from having to re-take the NCLEX-RN exam. We are grateful to Janet Smith, RN, BSN, NCLEX Coordinator/Adevia Health, for researching this urgent matter and sharing the information with us. We know that our readership will find it as valuable as we have.
Contrary to Malacañang claims most OFWs are still laborers --- Arroyo bill to detain professionals attacked
The Philippine Nurses Association’s President Dr. Leah Samaco Paquiz on Saturday expressed concern over the bill filed by Rep. Ignacio Arroyo to keep professionals, including nurses and doctors, from leaving for jobs abroad without first working in the Philippines for at least two years.
Did he file the bill because of government claims that Filipino professionals have become the bigger component of OFW deployments? If so, then he is wrong. The bigger segment is still laborers and unskilled workers.
The Philippine Medical Association expressed opposition but its vice-president did not elaborate because the PMA still had to actually learn from Arroyo what he really wants and what his proposed bill says.
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) opposed Arroyo’s House Bill 4580.
“We consider the bill absolutely unfair and highly discriminatory, because it singles out registered professionals,” said former senator and TUCP secretary-general Ernesto Herrera.
Negros Oriental’s Rep. Arroyo, the President’s brother-in-law, authored the bill with the aim of discouraging Filipino professionals from leaving the country. He expressed concern that the health and education sector may end up not having enough teachers and professionals if RP graduates continue to go abroad to work for high pay.
His proposed law covers doctors, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, medical technologists, physical therapists, engineers, teachers, sailors, accountants, interior designers, nutritionists and criminologists, librarians, guidance counselors and master plumbers. These are all in the Professional Regulatory Commission’s category of “registered professionals.”
Herrera questioned the government’s authority to restrain professionals from leaving.
He was joined by human rights lawyers interviewed by The Manila Times. They told us people couldn’t be prevented to leave the country if they want to.
Herrera has submitted his, the TUCP’s, position paper to the House and the Senate, petitioning the House Committee on Labor and Employment to reject Arroyo’s bill.
“We have a huge glut of professionals in many sectors. In the case of nurses, the main reason they are leaving the country is because wages here are grossly inadequate. And the pay is meager, precisely because of the massive surplus of nurses. This is the law of supply and demand at work,” Herrera said.
The TUCP official said preventing nurses from leaving the country would further create a huge surplus and lower their wages to a minimum.
Herrera said that nurses comprise the biggest group of professionals leaving the country. Every year, more than 21,000 Filipino nurses seek employment in the US alone.
He added that the Philippines has been producing more than 132,000 nurses every year.
Nurses’ salary increase law
Dr. Paquis explained that nurses, doctors and other professionals would not leave the country is they were paid properly.
Since 2002, she said, because of, Republic Act 9173, also known as the Nursing Act of 2002, the salaries of nurses should have been not lower than the government’s salary grade 15. “This is clear in Section 32 that ‘in order to enhance the general welfare, commitment to service and professionalism of nurses, the minimum base pay of nurses working in public health institution shall not be lower than salary grade 15,’ ” she pointed out.
“It has been six years since the law was enacted. It has not been implemented,” she complained.
“Under the law, a nurse in the government should be receiving a monthly salary of P16,093, but many nurses are still receiving way below this legal monthly salary. Some are receiving less than P10,000 monthly income. How do we expect these nurses to remain in government service with this kind of salary?” asked Paquiz. She points out that while salary is not the only reason why nurses serve, she recognizes that the foreign employment conditions are much better than here.”
Absolutely unfair
“We consider the bill absolutely unfair and highly discriminatory, because it singles out registered professionals,” said TUCP’s Herrera, a Manila Times columnist.
Herrera doubts the government’s capability to enforce the law.
“How is the government actually going to require compliance, when it is not in position to physically bar professionals from leaving the country,” he asked.
Like Herrera, other commentators question the wisdom of Rep. Arroyo’s proposal, considering that there is large surplus of professionals in many sectors of the labor market.
“We have a huge glut of professionals in many sectors. In the case of nurses, the main reason they are leaving the country is because wages here are grossly inadequate. And the pay is meager precisely because of the massive surplus of nurses. This is the law of supply and demand at work,” the former senator noted.
Annually, around 21,000 nurses leave the country to seek employment in the United States and Europe, which are considered the highest paying market for nurses globally.
Both the nursing and medical associations question why nursing and physicians’ positions all over the country are vacant.
Why is the government not filling these up?
If nurses are hired to take these jobs, some of them who would rather not leave their parents in the Philippines will stay.
Some are surprised why there seems to be a frenzy to hold professionals in the country when in fact the majority of OFWs deployed continue to be laborers and unskilled workers.
NSO statistics
According to the government’s National Statistics Office the number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who worked abroad at anytime during the period April to September 2007 was registered at 1.75 million. This represents an increase of 15.3 percent over the estimated 1.52 million OFWs in April to September 2006.
Out of the total OFWs during the period April to September 2007, 92.4 percent (1.61 million) were Overseas Contact Workers (OCWs) or those with existing work-contact abroad. The number of OCWs in April to September 2007 went up by 16.6 percent over the 1.38 million OCWs estimated for the same months in 2006.
The largest number of OFWs is in age group 25 to 29 years old
There were more male OFWs (50.9 percent) than females (49.1 percent) during the period April to September 2007. More than half (55.2 percent) of the OFWs were below 35 years old, the largest number (24.5 percent of total OFWs) was recorded in age group 25 to 29 years. Female OFWs were generally younger compared to male OFWs. Of the total number of female OFWs, 28.8 percent belonged to age group 25 to 29 years and 21.3 percent were in age group 30 to 34 years. Meanwhile, male OFWs were almost evenly distributed among the age groups 25 to 29 (20.3 percent), 30 to 34 (20 percent) and 45 years and over (22.8 percent).
Saudi Arabia remains the favorite destination of OFWs
Saudi Arabia remained to be the favorite destination of OFWs comprising 19.8 percent of the total OFWs who worked abroad in April to September 2007. More than one in 10 (12.1 percent) OFWs were in the United Arab Emirates. Those who worked in Europe accounted for 9.2 percent, slightly lower than those in North and South America at 9.3 percent. Other popular destinations included Hong Kong (6.7 percent), Singapore (6 percent), Japan (5.6 percent) and Taiwan (5.5 percent).
Laborers and unskilled workers top major occupation group
One out of three (35 percent) OFWs in April to September 2007 were laborers and unskilled workers, which include domestic helpers, cleaners and manufacturing laborers. During the same months in 2007, those who worked as service workers and shop and market sales workers made up 14.3 percent; trades and related workers, 13.8 percent; and plant and machine operators and assemblers, 13.4 percent.
Remittances in April to September 2007 total P110 billion
OFWs sent a total remittance of 110 billion pesos for the period April to September 2007, an increase of 8 billion pesos (7.7 percent) from the estimated remittance of 102 billion pesos for the same months in 2006. Included in the total remittances are cash sent (74.6 percent), cash brought home (20.7 percent) and remittances in kind (4.7 percent). Of the total cash remittance sent for the period April to September 2007, 76.8 percent were sent through bank, 14 percent were sent through door-to-door and the rest (9.2 percent) were sent through the agency and or local office, friends and or co-workers and other means. OFWs working in Asia, comprising 78.1 percent of all OFWs, sent the biggest cash remittance of 57.7 billion pesos. Among occupation groups, OFWs working as laborers or unskilled workers posted the highest cash remittance of 17.6 billion pesos.
The illustration shows the development of Chorleywood between 1868 and 1994 for a span of 126 years. Chorleywood is a village proximal to London whose population has steadily increased since the middle of the nineteenth century.
From 1868 to 1883, there already exists two main roads in its Northern and Western part and intersects in the Northwest area of the village. A small community exists on the Western part of the Park and Golf course.
Between 1883 and 1922, a railway was built in 1909 on the Southern part of Chorleywood running from the West to the East and with it, a station was also built. The population flourished surrounding the Chorleywood Station which is also adjacent to the first village that was established between 1868 and 1883.
A motorway o the Eastern side of the village was built between 1922 and 1970. The motorway intersects with the railway on the and with the main road on the North of the village. Further development was noticed on the Southwest of the village near the Chorleywood Station.
From 1970 to 1994, the Northeastern part of the village was also populated and developed due to the presence of a motorway and the main road. The Southeast area also flourished due to its accessibility or the presence of a motorway and railway.
To sum up, there was a steady increase in the population of Chorleywood from 1868 to 1994 and this is primarily due to the establishment of a railway and a motorway.
TRANSPORTATION IN ONEEUROPEANCITY
The bar graph shows the various transportation modes used to travel to and from work in a city in Europe in 1950, 1970 and 1990. It tells us of the percentage of travelers who commuted thru a bus, rode the car, pedaled the bike and those who walked to and from work.
In 1950, approximately 38% walked to go to and from their work site and around 29% chose to pedal their way to and from work. There were about 18% who commuted the bus and only a measly 5% used their own cars to go to and from their job.
In 1970, the bus was more preferred by the workforce with a tally of 30% which was followed by the use of a car at 25%. There were around 22% who used their bike and approximately 16% who walked to and from their job site.
By 1990, due to the proliferation of cars and fast pace of living, an estimated 28% rode their very own car in going to and from their work. An estimated 14%, 10% and 8& commuted the bus, travelled by foot and rode their bike to and from work, respectively.
Overall, most of the workforce in one European city in 1950 just walked their way to and from work while the use of car was not that popular or practical way back then. The complete opposite was recorded forty years later. In 1990, car use was favored while walking and biking were less preferred.
AIRLINE SURVEY
The chart indicates the outcome of an airline survey in 2002 of economy class business travelers. The number shows how many male and female passengers in each age bracket ranked a particular feature such as seat/leg room, meals/drink, attendant service and movies/in-flight entertainment as their most valued in-flight consideration.
Amongst the 100 females aged 25-45 who were surveyed, 34 of them prioritized attendant service as their most valued in-flight consideration, while seta/leg room, meals/drinks and movies came in second, third and fourth with a tally of 30, 26 and 10, respectively. On the other hand, males of the same age group gave more importance on seat/leg room as their top in-flight feature as agreed by 39 passengersand followed by attendant service, meals/drinks and movies with a tally of 27, 20 and 14, accordingly.
Of the 100 females who are 45 years old and above, ranked seat/leg room as their top in-flight consideration and followed by meals/drink, attendant service and movies which got a tally of 35, 31, 30 and 4, respectively. Amongst the male of the same age bracket, they prioritized the same in-flight features as their female counterpart. There were 46, 26, 24 and 4 who agreed that seat, attendant service, meals and movies as their top most consideration for in-flight services.
To conclude, majority of the respondents gave more importance to seat or leg room as their top in-flight consideration while all of those who were surveyed on all age brackets illustrated on the chart gave the least of importance on movies or in-flight entertainment when it comes to in-flight features.
The Internet is a rapidly growing communications resource that has had an impact on health care, and it is anticipated that the Internet will soon have a major effect on nursing and other health care sectors. It is essential for nurses and other health care professionals to have a conceptual framework for understanding the many aspects of the Internet. In this generation, we are now witnessing major changes in technology and the impact these changes are having upon our culture and work. Of these changes, one of the most significant is that occurring in information technology, brought about by advances in computers and networking. We are now able to communicate faster, to more places and in more ways than ever before. These potentials, however, bring with them unanticipated difficulties as the speed and dispersion of information increase. Health care professionals are now faced with an overwhelming set of new information demands and information sources. Computerized patient records, third-party payer databases, and artificial intelligence based diagnostic instruments are just a small selection of possible examples. Any individual facing such a deluge will fail in their attempt to navigate this future without a framework for incorporating and organizing these informational challenges. The Internet is one particular example of such an information challenge.
The Internet is becoming a part of everyday life for everyone, and this presence is extending into nursing as well. This site is intended to provide a common platform for accessing relevant information on the internet nurses and health care professionals.
In this light, Nurses Publication was created. And still in congruence to the increasing demand for Information, responsible ownership is needed.
Further, with the help of responsible officers, moderators and members, Nurses Publication is making history.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) conducted training sessions to frontline staff of PRC so they can be vigilant against fake documents issued by suspected unscrupulous persons wanting to have professional licenses.
NBI Supervising Document Examiner Eliodoro Constantino stressed that fake, fraudulent or tampered documents may include forged transcript of records and other certificates.
“It’s what you call a white collar crime. Somebody can be misrepresented by someone else,” he said during the two-day seminar which began August 19 at the PRC auditorium in Sampaloc, Manila .
Constantino said preventive and control measures can be done against questionable documents and forgery. The veteran NBI agent gave pointers during the seminar dubbed as “Questioned Documents Examination and Forgery Detection Seminar.”
PRC Commissioner Nilo L. Rosas, who gave the opening remarks, said fraud is as old as history. “According to history, Roman Emperor Titus and Roman Gladiator Mark Anthony were the first known forgers,” he said.
“The Philippines had its share of problems with fraud. The PRC and the Department of Education (DepEd) had their share of such cases,” said Commissioner Rosas, who was Education Undersecretary from 1998 to 2000.
DepEd and PRC have had such fraudulent cases over the years wherein both government agencies have to cancel certificates of some people who faked their transcripts and other official documents.
A classic case is that of fake marine engineer who was also caught with fake school records and birth certificate. The suspect’s wife became confused if the man she married was an impostor.
“Forgery undermines the competency of the different professions. And so, this seminar is the first step on how to detect fraudulent documents,” Commissioner Rosas said.
Constantino delved on the mechanics of handwriting identification, detection of fraud through signatures, and in-depth study of actual alterations of documents.
According to Constantino, a traced forgery is the result of an attempt to transfer to a fraudulent document an exact facsimile of a genuine signature which was executed by actually following the outline of a genuine signature with a writing instrument.
Participants will be able to detect if the signatures on the documents is genuine and if the document is forged.
In our Values subject in high school, we are tasked to make a tribute to people especial in our hearts. And fortunately, this is my third tribute article after two important personalities in my life.Yumi, at 20, why the title? Well, aside from the fact that I call her young at 19, she’s now taking a leap to another battle in life and so – Yumi at 20. Before we get deeper, with this mini rush tribute, let us get to know her, who is YUMI? Main copied the profile of yumi in her friendster blog, so I guess we are safe, ahehe, here she is:
Name:Jessa Rose M. Tenorio, RN

About me:
Just because I'm quiet doesn't mean I don't have anything to say. I judge people easily for my first impression. I'm unpredictable and spontaneous. I try to be forgiving. I enjoy being unique. I'd rather look immature and have fun then care what other people think. Sometimes I'm really confident, other times I feel really insecure. I envy people who can fit in so easily without even trying. I'm opinionated and stubborn but I'm loyal, sincere and caring. I hate when people make me feel guilty to get their way. I'll always be here to listen to your problems and i will stick for you no matter what happens.
