While many other Nursing blogs are publishing articles on Medsurg, Fundamentals of Nursing and the like, one factor often disregarded is the need for Nurses to be globally competitive, the knowledge on Medsurg and all Nursing subjects does not measure competitiveness nor does it make a nurse competitive. A good command in English is also necessary in the making of a competitive nurse, with that, Nurses Publication will start posting articles (TIPS, TRIVIA, VOCABULARY, QUESTIONS) that might help nurses improve or have a good command in English. Here we go:
ENGLISH TIPS AND TRIVIA
· You say “in spite of’ but you say “despite”. These two mean the same thing, but when you use the latter, omit the prepositions ‘in’ and ‘of’.
§ E.g. “in spite of’ the strong rain, I went out.
§ “Despite” the strong rain, I went out.
· Whenever you use the expression “one of the…” the following word must be in the plural form.
§ One of the project is missing. Note: The word project must be in the plural form, so you say…
§ One of the projects is missing.
· The prepositions “in” and “on” have different uses when referring to dates. Use “on” if the date is complete as per month, date and year. Otherwise, use “in”.
§ The deadline is in December.
§ The deadline is in December 15.
§ The deadline is on December 15, 2008.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS IN WRITING ESSAYS
- Practice tense consistency.
- Observe Person and Number Consistencies.
- Use parallel statements.
- Avoid using clichés
- Avoid faulty translations of Filipino idioms
- Avoid starting with phrases like”for me, as a student, first of all,etc.”
- Avoid shortcuts like &, w/o,@
- Never use text spelling.
- Address the question.
- Have presence of mind.
